Does the Special K diet work? – Part 1
The Special K Diet – THE QUICK FIX
The Special K diet works but only for a short term, quick loss of about 6 pounds. If that is all you need to lose this spring to fit into your summer wardrobe, this is a great fast fix.
The diet is not realistic for long term weight loss goals. So if all you need to lose is a couple pounds, read on.
The Special K diet instructs you to replace one meal everyday with 2 bowls of Special K cereal. How appealing is that to you?
The premise of the diet is a a yet another variation of a low fat, high carb diets.
These are the foods that Kellogg’s suggests you base your daily food intake on:
o Any variety of Special K Cereal
o Skim Milk
o Special K waffles
o Light syrup
o Fruit
o Vegetables
o Special K protein bars
o Special K protein water
o Special K cereal bars
o Special K snack bars
The Special K diet websites states that the average weight loss by replacing meals with 2 cereal meals is 5 pounds. Their legal statement includes this clause:
“THESE MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED AS IS WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.”
Hmmm… Fitness for a particular purpose. Does that mean in other words if the diet causes you other health problems, it’s not their fault? I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.
I looked for information from people who have tried the diet.
In a nutshell, this is what I learned from them:
o The high fiber content of the diet increases your bowl movement
o Some people said they felt a lack of energy after starting the diet
o Almost all of the dieters said that they found the diet boring
o They always felt hungry after finishing their bowls of cereal
One dieter said that he lost 4 pounds but that eating 28 bowls of Special K cereal was just not worth. He said he now feels the same way about Special K as he does grandmas underwear.
Wow. That’s enough to make me want to run from a box of Special K. The idea of skim milk already had me looking for excuses why I should not try this diet.
As far as Fad Diets go, this is not a bad one. It does have involve healthy foods. Although oatmeal would be a better choice of cereal. It has more nutrients and vitamins. If you add exercise to the diet and consider calories on the third meal that the plan leaves up to you, this diet can work.
Kellogg’s only seems to promote their products in the diet. they do not mention exercise, daily nutritional needs that need to be addressed or the value of your water intake.
