Common dieting mistakes – Part 5

Dieting is or can be a great thing. In all things we do, we do from our mind and will. Dieting starts from an a self assessment and determination. From there it can quickly become a test of our mental fortitude and will. Dieting is based on a solid principal that what goes in your mouth has a great impact on your weight, health, and sense of well being.

Most dieters prepare themselves by considering the issue. They do so by asking questions and reading about dieting. Such quest become the second step. The third step is to embark on the diet.

Like all things, dieting has to be done right. The point of dieting is to deny yourself and your desires. Your desire to loose weight vs. your desire to satisfy your needs or more accurately your desires. Needs and desire are two different things.

Dieting is going beyond or short of your comfort zone. Sometimes it is going to “hurt.” Personally I find that it is very difficult to diet, loose weight, get fitter in familiar surroundings. I loose weight and diet better when I am out of my home. I also eat worse when I am out of my home, so I have to be in the right frame of mind to get it right.

Do not fad diet. You could and it could work for a while but the effects could be temporary and self defeating.

Be realistic. If your diet and weight loss goal is too great it will fail by a great margin. It is better to gain a little or in this case loose a little and keep it off than to loose drastically and get all back to soon.

Consider your metabolism. In essence it is how your body “burns” the food you eat. One way to increase your metabolism is to get active. Dieting and maintain or even increasing your metabolism are more effective than just dieting or just increasing your metabolism.

One of the reasons of why many people gain weight is they involuntarily decrease metabolism and eat the same quantities of food. This is best illustrated in seniors who decrease activity because of loose of stamina but eat as much as they did when they were very active.

Measure your progress. Measuring your progress is possible. I measure my progress by grabbing my belly fat around my belly button. It is easy, noticeable, and can be done with no equipment. People also be a crude (sometimes really crude) indicator of success. Take such evaluation at face value or even at inflated value. If it keeps your going in the right direction, take it and win with it.

Forsake some foods. Soda drinks, chips, ice creams, come to mind. Some people even forsake proper juice drinks in favor of water, tea, or other non sugar drinks. Beer and wine also contribute to weight gain.

Forsaking or greatly reducing sugar consumption goes an incredibly long way. Actually, getting rid of sugar laden foods and drinks would be my first and foremost advice. Soft drinks, cookies, and candies are some examples.

Eat better. You can diet and eat better. Nutritionists advocate the increase of grain, vegetable, and fruit consumption. Avoid greasy or fat laden foods.

Understand that what you desire and what your body needs are two different things. You body needs nutrition and it needs to be active to burn the calories. Your desires are endless and mostly determined by what you can or can’t afford.

Most diets fail because of lack of determination and discipline. Most of my attempts at dieting and weight loss do anyway. I mostly loose weight when I take the summer off and go financially broke. When I am broke, then I go go for day hikes and don’t take enough food. The question of determination and discipline don’t even come into the equation when I set it up like that.
